Helping Manhattan Residents Achieve Their Health Goals Through Nutrition, Diet & Weight Loss
The world of nutritional information can be overwhelming. On a regular basis I personally read three journals, countless articles, and go to seminars given by some of the top minds around. I have studied nutrition for the past 16 years and have been applying that knowledge to myself, my family and my patients for the past 14 years of practice. A few of the main lessons that have stuck with me over the years are these:
- We should eat small frequent meals
- We should be eating 7-9 servings of vegetables a day (some fruit included)
- Organic is better
- Carbs are not evil, but wheat often is
- We don’t need supplements to survive, but we do need them to thrive!
- No one knows everything!
With regard to nutrition, I take the same approach with my patients as I do with my family and myself. First, your diet has to be the best it can be. You’ve heard of the saying “you are what you eat,” well it’s true! If you place low quality ingredients in your body you will have a low quality of life. So the first commandment of nutrition is “Eat Food!”
Real food is not adulterated or processed, it actually has no ingredients other than the pure food that it is. For example; broccoli, salmon, rice, chickpeas, brussel sprouts, lettuce, carrots, quinoa, cauliflower, tuna, turkey, eggs, etc. You get the picture.
Anytime you eat something with added ingredients, consider it processed. Now there is minimally processed food (i.e. Olive Oil, which is olives that have been pressed and bottled), and there is maximally processed food (supermarket whitebread, Hot Dogs, Big Macs, Twinkies…) you get the picture. There is also everything in between. The bottom line is the less processed the better. The purer the food the better!
Organic is better!
The incredible amount of chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis because of the way food is grown and produced in this country will make you sick when you learn enough about it. I would love to eat only organic foods grown locally by a farmer down the road, but it’s just not realistic for me or for most Americans.
So here’s what I do. I buy organic when it’s convenient and when it seems feasible (I won’t spend 3 dollars to buy 1 organic zucchini). Because there are issues with our food supply I teach my patients to live as healthy as they can within their means, and then the rest can be made up in part by taking the right supplements.
Nutritional Supplements
I do not believe there is one supplement protocol for everyone. We may all benefit from a multivitamin and a Fish oil supplement but proper nutrition should be evaluated and prescribed by someone that knows what you need. I don’t want my patients to read an article about the next wonderberry and start taking it because it will cure all of their problems.
At our office we formulate a nutrition plan for each individual based upon their particular needs. There are a lot of protocols that I follow that work 80% of the time, but if you need something out of the ordinary we will figure that out by evaluating a comprehensive history, utilizing Applied Kinesiology, Bioimpedance Analysis, and Blood chemistry analysis. If you are comprehensive in your approach to nutrition it can have incredible effects on your overall health!
BioImpedance Analysis (BIA)
BIA is an incredible tool that we utilize to evaluate your overall hydration, toxicity status, base metabolic rate, body fat percentage, lean body mass, and overall resiliency. There are thousands of articles referencing the accuracy of a BIA machine. BIA is a great tool to show patients a progress report on their health as well. It’s exciting to start off with a reading that may not be up to snuff and watch as a patient progresses towards optimal health.
Weight Loss Program
I like to call it “Optimal Body Composition.” Our most popular program for weight loss or "Optimal Body Composition" is FirstLine Therapy. Dr. Piken is a certified FirstLine Therapy provider.
We offer 12 week programs consisting of either 6 or 12 sessions depending on your goals. During the program you will learn how to eat, when to eat, what to eat, and how to exercise to guarantee weight loss. You will be consistently monitored utilizing Bio Impedance Analysis readings to track your progress. The weight loss results are great and the knowledge you obtain from this program can be applied for life! Read more about First Line Therapy on our blog.
